Elizabeth Blackwell

The first woman physician in the U.S., she founded a hospital for poor women and children in New York city; in 1868 The [[Woman’s Medical College of the New York Infirmary]] was established as an offshoot of the infirmary.  It incorporated Blackwell’s innovative ideas about medical education – a four-year training period with much more extensive clinical training than previously required.
