Mezzanotte may refer to a larger family, an individual, or a business.
Giancarlo Mezzanotte, called Jack by friends, colleagues and family, is a detective-sergeant on the New York police department, and one of the novel’s primary characters.
Greenwood, New Jersey
The larger clan is divided between Manhattan (see the map below) and the Mezzanotte family farm in Greenwood, New Jersey, where they grow flowers for the wholesale market and run an apiary.
Mezzanotte Family on Union Square
Mezzanotte Brothers Florist is the retail side of the business in Manhattan, on the corner of 13th Street and University Place. The first Mezzanotte to come to the States in 1830 (Massimo) bought a small farm which became the retail store, greenhouses and a nursery. There are two residences on the property: the original brick farmhouse where Jack lives with his two sisters Bambina and Celestina, and another brick house where his Uncle Alfonso and Aunt Philomena live with their large family, all of whom are involved in the business.
The house at 43 13th Street where Jack lives with his two unmarried sisters is meant to be a brick farmhouse in the style seen here. Because the entire property is enclosed by a brick wall, the house is not visible from the street.
